Ahn Junggeun

An Jung-geun (1879–1910) was a Korean independence activist and political thinker of the Korean Empire who took part in the anti-Japanese righteous army movement to restore his country's sovereignty. In 1909 he shot Ito Hirobumi, a leading Japanese statesman, at Harbin, and for this he was imprisoned at Lüshun and executed the following year. While in prison he wrote "A Treatise on Peace in East Asia," a vision of peaceful coexistence among the nations of the region that revealed him as a thinker as well as a fighter.
