An Gyuhong

An Gyu-hong (1879–1910) was a righteous army (uibyeong) commander active during the Jeongmi phase of the volunteer militia movement in the final years of the Korean Empire. Having been born a commoner who once worked as a farmhand (damsari), he was a rare militia leader of humble origin, waging resistance against Japanese forces mainly around the Boseong area of South Jeolla Province. As a militia commander of common rather than aristocratic background, he is regarded as a symbolic figure showing that the anti-Japanese righteous army movement spread widely beyond any single social class.
