Choe Ikhyeon

Choe Ik-hyeon was a Confucian scholar and righteous-army commander of the late Joseon and Korean Empire era, remembered as a leading figure who opposed foreign influence and modernization policies under the "defend orthodoxy, reject heterodoxy" ideology. He resisted the edict ordering men to cut their topknots, seeking to preserve the traditional order, and when the 1905 Eulsa Treaty was forced upon Korea he rose up and raised a volunteer army in protest. After the uprising he was captured by Japanese forces and taken to Tsushima Island, where he died.
