Choe Myeonggil

Choe Myeong-gil (1586–1647) was a scholar-official and statesman of the late Joseon period, learned not only in Neo-Confucianism but also in Yangming studies, and active as a diplomat. During the Qing invasion of 1636 he became a leading voice of the peace faction, arguing for reconciliation with the Qing and, against the hardline advocates of resistance, pursuing a pragmatic diplomacy aimed at preserving the state. His realist stance, which placed the survival of the kingdom above principled defiance, sparked fierce debate with the pro-war faction and left a lasting mark on late Joseon political history.
