Choe Sihyeong

Choe Si-hyeong, known by his pen name Haewol, was a religious leader and thinker of the late Joseon period who became the second leader of Donghak, succeeding its founder Choe Je-u. After the founder's execution, he spent decades evading government pursuit while organizing the religious community and gathering its scattered teachings into scriptures, growing Donghak into a nationwide religious movement. His work laid the groundwork for the 1894 Donghak Peasant Movement, and he was executed in 1898.
