Choe Chiwon

Choe Chiwon (857–after 908?) was a scholar and writer of the late Silla period, and a leading intellectual among the head-rank-six (yukduarpum) class, whose advancement was capped by Silla's rigid bone-rank system. In 868 he went to Tang China, passed the bin'gonggwa examination held for foreigners, and served as a Tang official, earning renown for his "Proclamation Denouncing Huang Chao," written to condemn the Huang Chao rebellion. After returning home he left behind the Gyewon Pilgyeong, a collection of his writings, and he was later honored as one of the Eighteen Sages of Korea enshrined in the Confucian shrine.
