Gi Samyeon

奇參衍Righteous Army Commander

1851~1908

Gi Sam-yeon (1851-1908), who went by the pen name Seongjae, was a righteous-army commander active during the Korean Empire period. He served as commander of the Honam Righteous Uprising Alliance, which united the various volunteer militias of the Honam region, making him a central figure in the region's righteous-army movement. His resistance against the loss of national sovereignty helped lay the groundwork for armed anti-Japanese struggle in the area, and the Republic of Korea later honored him as a patriot for the independence cause.
