Gung-ye was born into a marginal branch of the Silla royal family and lived as a Buddhist monk before gathering his own forces and founding Later Goguryeo in 901. He later renamed the state Taebong, making it one of the three powers of the Later Three Kingdoms period alongside Silla and Later Baekje. Proclaiming himself the Maitreya Buddha and ruling harshly, he was driven out by his own subordinates in 918, after which Wang Geon took his place and founded Goryeo.
