Gwak Jae-u

Gwak Jae-u (1552–1617) was a righteous-army commander of the mid-Joseon period who was among the first to raise a volunteer militia when the Japanese invasions (Imjin War) broke out. Fighting in red robes atop a white horse, he became known as the "Red-Robed General," and his stands at the battles of Jeongamjin and Hwawangsanseong helped defend the Gyeongsang region. He is remembered as a symbol of the civilian militias that rose on their own to protect the country after the regular army had collapsed.
