Gwanggaeto the Great

King Gwanggaeto the Great (374–412) was the 19th monarch of Goguryeo; his given name was Damdeok, and he was a son of King Gogugyang. After ascending the throne in 391, he carried out vigorous campaigns of conquest that greatly expanded Goguryeo's territory in every direction. He adopted his own era name, "Yeongnak," asserting Goguryeo's independent standing, and his achievements were inscribed on the Gwanggaeto Stele erected by his son, King Jangsu, which survives to this day.
