Gwanghaegun

Gwanghaegun (1575–1641) was the 15th king of Joseon (r. 1608–1623). Named crown prince during the Imjin War, he led a separate branch of the court and rallied volunteer armies. After taking the throne he pursued postwar recovery and implemented the Daedongbeop tax reform, while steering a neutral diplomacy between Ming China and the rising Later Jin to shield Joseon from renewed war. Yet his frequent purges, along with the killing of his half-brother Prince Yeongchang and the confinement of Queen Inmok, led the Westerners faction to depose him in the Injo coup of 1623—making him the second king overthrown by a coup after Yeonsangun.
