Gyunyeo

Gyunyeo (923-973) was a Buddhist monk and scholar of early Goryeo who worked to unify the Hwaeom (Avatamsaka) school, which at the time had splintered into several branches. To make difficult Buddhist doctrine easier for ordinary people to grasp, he expressed it through hyangga, songs written in the native Korean tongue, his best-known work being the eleven-verse "Bohyeon sipwonga" (Songs of the Ten Vows of Samantabhadra). His efforts are significant for organizing Buddhist thought and spreading the faith widely.
