Heo Hwangok

Heo Hwang-ok was the queen consort of King Suro, founder of Geumgwan Gaya, and is also known as Queen Heo or Empress Boju. According to the Garakguk-gi in the Samguk Yusa, she was a princess of the distant land of Ayuta who in the year 48 crossed the sea together with her elder brother, the monk Jangyu, and her attendants to reach Garak and become Suro's queen. She bore ten sons, among them King Geodeung, and the legend of a queen who arrived from across the sea forms an important strand of Gaya's foundation story.
