Heo Wi

Heo Wi (許蔿, 1854–1908), known by his art name Wangsan (旺山), was a Righteous Army commander in the final years of the Korean Empire and a patriot of the independence movement. As Japan tightened its grip on the nation, he served as military commander of the Thirteen-Province Righteous Army, a coalition of regional militias, and led the vanguard in the campaign to retake Seoul, the seat of the Japanese resident-general. After the operation failed he was arrested and became the first person to be executed at Seodaemun Prison.
