An independence activist and general during the Japanese colonial period (1868-1943) who, as a former righteous army fighter, led armed resistance. As Commander-in-Chief of the Korean Independence Army, he led the Battle of Bongodong in 1920 to a decisive victory over Japanese forces. He later moved to the Maritime Province of Siberia and continued the independence movement under difficult circumstances. His remains were enshrined at the Seoul National Cemetery, and his activities can be explored at the Independence Hall of Korea; he was also depicted in the film 'Battle of Bongodong.'
