Homer Hulbert

Homer Hulbert (1863–1949) was an American Methodist missionary and educator who came to Joseon and taught English during the Korean Empire era. Recognizing the value of the Korean script, he helped pioneer the study and spread of the Korean language, producing textbooks written in Hangul, and he also worked as a historian and as a journalist who helped publish The Independent. He supported Emperor Gojong in defending Korea's sovereignty and aided the Korean independence movement, including backing the mission of the secret envoys to The Hague, and is honored as a foreign patriot who "loved Korea more than Koreans did."
