Hwang Jini

Hwang Jini (1506–1567) was a gisaeng (courtesan) and poet from Kaesong (Songdo) in the mid-Joseon period, also known by the name Myeongwol ("Bright Moon"). Renowned for her sijo and Chinese-style poetry, she was equally versed in calligraphy, music, and dance, as well as in Neo-Confucian learning and the Confucian classics, and she mingled with the scholar-officials of her day. Her sijo remain celebrated as landmark works of women's literature in the Joseon era, and she is remembered as one of the "Three Wonders of Songdo."
