Hyecho

慧超Buddhist Monk

704~787

Hyecho (704-787) was a monk of the Silla kingdom who, in his youth, made a pilgrimage across India and the Western Regions. He recorded this journey in a travelogue, the Wang ocheonchukguk jeon (Memoir of a Pilgrimage to the Five Kingdoms of India), which was rediscovered in 1908 and is now regarded as an invaluable source for the study of exchanges between East and West. In his later years he settled at Mount Wutai in China, where he passed away in 787.
