King Hyeonjong of Joseon
顯宗King1641~1674
Hyeonjong (顯宗, 1641-1674) was the 18th king of Joseon, reigning from 1659 to 1674. His reign is best remembered for the Rites Controversy (Yesong), in which the Westerner and Southerner factions clashed over the proper mourning period following the deaths of King Hyojong and his queen. Far more than a dispute over ritual, the controversy came to symbolize the political rivalry between the factions and shaped the political landscape of his era.
