Yi Dongnyeong

李東寧Independence Activist

1869~1940

Yi Dong-nyeong (1869–1940) was an enlightenment activist and journalist during the Korean Empire who went on to become a leading independence fighter under Japanese colonial rule. He took part in the secret society Sinminhoe and helped establish the Sinheung Military Academy in Manchuria to train independence soldiers. Above all, he served as the first Speaker of the Provisional Legislative Assembly and later as President of the Provisional Government of Korea, placing him at the heart of the independence movement.
