Yi Gangnyeon

Yi Kang-nyeon (1858–1908), known by the pen name Ungang, was a commander of the Righteous Armies (uibyeong) during the final years of the Korean Empire. Raising a volunteer force in Mungyeong, Gyeongsang Province, he fought against Japanese encroachment on Korea's sovereignty and was chosen as commander-in-chief of the righteous forces across the Yeongnam and Hoseo regions. He is remembered as a leading figure who took up armed resistance to defend the nation.
