Yi Hoeyeong

Yi Hoe-yeong (1867-1932) began as an educator and thinker of the Korean Empire and went on to become an anarchist-leaning independence activist during the Japanese colonial period. Born into a prominent aristocratic family, he sold his entire fortune and went into exile in Manchuria together with his brothers and family to devote himself to the independence movement, founding the Sinheung Military School there to train future leaders of the independence army. His life of giving up all his privileges and possessions for his country is remembered as a classic example of noblesse oblige.
