Yi Jagyeom

Yi Ja-gyeom was a civil official of the middle Goryeo period and a leading example of the aristocratic maternal-relative families that dominated court politics. As father-in-law to both King Yejong and King Injong—and maternal grandfather to Injong—he bound himself to the royal house through overlapping marriages. After Yejong's death he placed his grandson Injong on the throne and then married two of his own daughters to Injong, concentrating power in his own hands. His ambitions eventually reached toward the throne itself, leading to the Rebellion of Yi Ja-gyeom in 1126; he was ultimately removed by Injong and is remembered as a symbol of the excesses of Goryeo's aristocratic clan politics.
