Yi Seunghun

Yi Seung-hun (1756–1801) was a Catholic believer in late Joseon Korea who, in 1784, became the first Korean to be baptized, receiving the Christian name Peter in Beijing, China. After returning home he served as a central figure in the early Catholic community and played an important role in establishing the Catholic faith in Korea. Belonging to the Namin political faction and connected by marriage to figures such as Jeong Yak-yong, he was martyred during the Catholic Persecution of 1801.
