Jang Huibin (Jang Okjeong)

Jang Ok-jeong, known as Royal Noble Consort Hui-bin of the Jang clan (1659–1701), was a concubine of King Sukjong, the 19th monarch of Joseon, and rose to the position of queen consort from 1689 to 1694. She was also the birth mother of the future King Gyeongjong, the 20th monarch. Her elevation and later removal from the throne were bound up with the "hwan-guk," the abrupt reversals of power between the Southerner and Westerner factions, making her a symbol of the turbulent partisan politics of Sukjong's reign. She was ultimately ordered to take poison and died in 1701.
