Jeong Hasang

Jeong Ha-sang (Paul, 1795–1839) was a lay leader and martyr of the Catholic Church in late Joseon Korea, the son of Jeong Yak-jong—martyred in the 1801 persecution—and a nephew of the scholar Jeong Yak-yong. He wrote the "Sangjaesangseo" (Letter to the Prime Minister), in which he reasoned that the persecution of Catholicism was unjust and appealed to the court for freedom of belief. He was martyred in the persecution of 1839 and was canonized as a saint by Pope John Paul II in 1984.
