Jinul

Jinul (1158-1210) was a monk of the mid-Goryeo period who led the Suseonsa community in an effort to reform a disordered Buddhist establishment. He shaped the direction of Seon (Zen) practice through the dual cultivation of meditative concentration and wisdom (jeonghye ssangsu) and through the path of sudden awakening followed by gradual cultivation (dono jeomsu). His teachings became a foundation of Korean Seon Buddhism and of the Jogye Order, and he was later honored with the posthumous title National Preceptor Bojo.
