Zhou Wenmo

Zhou Wenmo (Korean: Ju Mun-mo, 1752–1801) was a Chinese-born Roman Catholic priest, remembered as the first foreign missionary to enter Joseon Korea. Baptized as James, he slipped into Seoul in 1795 and carried out clandestine missionary work for about six years. He was arrested during the Sinyu Persecution of 1801 and martyred at Saenamteo, and in 2014 he was beatified by Pope Francis. He holds a symbolic place in the early spread of Catholicism and the history of martyrdom in Korea.
