King Jungjong of Joseon

中宗King

1488~1544

Jungjong (1488-1544) was the eleventh king of Joseon (reigned 1506-1544), placed on the throne by the coup known as the Jungjong Restoration, which deposed the tyrannical Yeonsangun. After his accession he brought reform-minded scholars such as Jo Gwang-jo into government, but growing tension with them ended in the Gimyo Purge, in which the reformers were removed. His reign marked a period of intensifying rivalry between the established meritorious officials and the reformist literati, a notable turning point in Joseon political history.
