Ju Sigyeong

周時經 · 1876~1914

Korean Linguist

A Korean language scholar of the Korean Empire period (1876-1914), he researched the Korean language and writing system and laid the foundation for the modernization of Hangul. He published 'Gukeo Munbeop' (Korean Grammar) and other works systematically organizing Korean grammar, and worked to call our script 'Hangul', for which he is called the 'Father of Hangul'. The students he trained later continued research into Korean and dictionary compilation. His dictionary compilation efforts led into the Hangul movement that became the background for the film 'Malmoi'.
