Kim Dae-jung

金大中President

1924~2009

Kim Dae-jung (1924–2009) was the 15th president of the Republic of Korea and, alongside Kim Young-sam, a leading figure of the democratic movement who long stood against military rule. Enduring repeated threats to his life, he persisted in the struggle for democracy, and his election brought about the country's first peaceful transfer of power through the ballot. During his presidency he held an inter-Korean summit, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2000.
