Mangi and Mangsoi

Mangi and Mangsoi were the leaders of an uprising that broke out in 1176 at Myeonghak-so in Gongju, Chungcheong Province, during the era of military rule in Goryeo. A "so" was a special administrative district whose residents bore heavier burdens and faced greater discrimination than those of ordinary counties, and their revolt stands as a representative example of resistance by farmers and lower-class people against status discrimination. The uprising continued for about a year and a half into the following year, and is regarded as a landmark instance of lower-class struggle under the military regime.
