Manjeok

萬積Slave

?~1198

Manjeok was a slave in Goryeo during the era of military rule, serving as a private slave of Choe Chung-heon, the most powerful figure of the time. In 1198 he gathered slaves in the capital and plotted an uprising aimed at abolishing their bound status, but the plan was uncovered beforehand and failed. Though it never came to pass, Manjeok's rebellion is remembered as a notable case in which slaves in the rigidly hierarchical society of Goryeo sought to challenge the social order themselves.
