Muhak Daesa

Muhak (1327-1405) was a Buddhist monk active from the late Goryeo into the early Joseon period; his secular surname was Bak, his given name Jacho, and he was also known by the name Gyewolheon. He served as royal preceptor (wangsa) to Yi Seong-gye, the founder of Joseon, acting as a spiritual mentor to the new dynasty. He is remembered above all for advising on the founding of Joseon and the transfer of the capital to Hanyang, a notable example of a Buddhist figure helping to lay the foundations of the new state.
