Queen Munjeong

Queen Munjeong of the Yun clan (1501-1565) was a queen and regent of mid-Joseon Korea, serving as the third royal consort of King Jungjong. She was invested as queen in 1517 after the death of the previous queen, Janggyeong, and when her young son ascended the throne as King Myeongjong at the age of twelve in 1545, she governed as regent behind the veil for eight years. During this period her relatives, most notably her brother Yun Won-hyeong, held power, and she promoted a revival of Buddhism, leaving a lasting mark on the politics and religion of the mid-Joseon era.
