King Munmu

文武王King

626~681

King Munmu was the 30th ruler of Silla and the monarch who completed the unification of the Three Kingdoms. After ascending the throne, he led the Silla-Tang War to victory, driving Tang forces from the Korean Peninsula in 676 and achieving unification centered on Silla. In keeping with his wish to become a sea dragon and guard the kingdom after death, his remains were laid to rest on a rocky islet in the East Sea, forming the underwater tomb known as the Tomb of King Munmu.
