Empress Myeongseong (Queen Min)

Empress Myeongseong of the Min clan (1851–1895) was the queen consort of Gojong, the 26th king of Joseon and the first emperor of the Korean Empire. Born into the Yeoheung Min family of Gyeonggi Province, she took a leading role in foreign diplomacy toward powers such as Qing China and Russia amid a rapidly shifting international order, becoming deeply involved in state affairs. She was assassinated by Japanese forces in the 1895 Eulmi Incident, an event that came to symbolize the rivalry of foreign powers over Joseon at the time.
