Na Hyeseok

Na Hye-sok (1896–1948) was a painter and writer active during the Japanese colonial period, regarded as Korea's first woman Western-style painter and its first female novelist. She created oil paintings while also publishing fiction and essays, and—known by her pen name Jeongwol—she voiced ideas of women's liberation that were remarkably ahead of her time. Moving between art and women's and social activism, she holds an important place in the history of modern Korean women.
