Nam Jahyeon

Nam Ja-hyeon (1872–1933) was a Korean woman who devoted herself to the independence movement in Manchuria during the Japanese colonial period. Because she supported the armed resistance and cared for the independence fighters, she came to be known as the "Mother of the Independence Army," and she famously cut off part of a finger to write a blood-letter proclaiming her homeland's will to be free. In an era when women rarely took part, she stands out as a figure who fought at the very forefront of the independence struggle.
