Nongae

Nongae (1574–1593) was born into a yangban family in Jangsu, Jeolla Province, during the reign of King Seonjo of Joseon, and is remembered as a righteous woman of the Imjin War. After Japanese forces captured the fortress of Jinju, she is said to have thrown herself into the Nam River while clutching a Japanese commander in her arms, dying alongside him. Her story has long been honored as a symbol of a woman's defiance and fidelity to her country amid war.
