King Sejo (Prince Suyang)

Sejo (Grand Prince Suyang) was the seventh king of Joseon, the second son of Sejong, who took the throne after ousting his young nephew Danjong. Having seized power through the coup of 1453 (Gyeyu Jeongnan), he strengthened royal authority by reviving the system in which the Six Ministries reported directly to the king, and he introduced the Jikjeon Law, which granted land to officials only for the duration of their actual service. He also began the compilation of the Gyeongguk Daejeon, Joseon's foundational law code, laying out a more organized system of state governance.
