Seol Chong

Seol Chong (655?–?) was a scholar of Unified Silla and the son of the monk Wonhyo; his courtesy name was Chongji and his art name Bingwoldang. He organized idu, a system that adapted and interpreted Chinese characters to fit the Silla language, making it possible to read and understand difficult classical Chinese texts in Korean word order and expression. This work helped Confucian learning and other scholarship take root in Silla society.
