Queen Seondeok

Queen Seondeok (r. 632–647), whose given name was Deokman, was a daughter of King Jinpyeong and became the 27th ruler of Silla and the first reigning queen in Korean history. During her reign she oversaw the building of the Cheomseongdae astronomical observatory and the nine-story wooden pagoda of Hwangnyongsa Temple, and she promoted able figures such as Kim Yu-sin and Kim Chun-chu, laying groundwork for the later unification of the Three Kingdoms. Early in her reign she continued the Geonbok era name, then changed it to Inpyeong in 634.
