King Seongjong of Joseon

成宗King

1457~1494

Seongjong (1457–1495) was the ninth king of the Joseon dynasty, reigning from 1469 to 1494. He completed and promulgated the Gyeongguk daejeon, the dynasty's foundational law code that had been compiled over several preceding reigns, thereby establishing the institutional framework of state governance. He also reorganized the Hongmungwan, the office charged with scholarship and royal counsel, and appointed members of the Sarim literati to office, working to consolidate Joseon's culture and institutions. His reign is regarded as the period in which the dynasty's system of government took firm and stable shape.
