Seosan Daesa (Hyujeong)

Hyujeong (1520–1604), better known by his pen names Cheongheo and Seosan (Great Master Seosan), was an eminent Buddhist monk of mid-Joseon Korea. When the Imjin War broke out, he was appointed supreme commander of monk-soldiers across the country and rallied monks nationwide into an army to resist the invasion; among his disciples was the celebrated Great Master Samyeong (Yujeong). He is remembered as a leading example of a Buddhist practitioner who took up arms as a militia leader when the nation faced crisis.
