Sin Chaeho

Sin Chae-ho (1880-1936) was an independence activist and nationalist historian during Japan's colonial rule of Korea. He began his career in the enlightenment and press movement in the final years of the Korean Empire, and through works such as the "Joseon Sanggosa" (Ancient History of Joseon) he laid the foundations of a nationalist historiography that reinterpreted Korea's ancient past from an independent perspective. At the request of the Uiyeoldan, he also wrote the "Declaration of the Korean Revolution," which set out the case for armed struggle. He joined the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea in 1919 but later left it over differences of view and took part in anarchist activities; he died in Lüshun Prison in 1936.
