Shin Saimdang

Sin Saimdang (1504–1551) was a painter, poet, and writer of the mid-Joseon period, renowned for her mastery of poetry, calligraphy, and painting. Born in Gangneung, her given name was Sin In-seon, while "Saimdang" was her art name; she was also the mother of the Confucian scholar Yulgok Yi I and the painter Yi Mae-chang. In an era when women's public activity was heavily restricted, she cultivated a distinctive artistic world, and today her portrait appears on the South Korean 50,000-won banknote.
