Yi Seong-gye (1335-1408) was a military commander in the late Goryeo period who seized power through the turnaround at Wihwa Island in 1388. In 1392 he founded a new dynasty, Joseon, becoming its first king under the temple name Taejo, and later moved the capital to Hanyang (present-day Seoul), laying the foundations of the Joseon state.
