Terauchi Masatake

Terauchi Masatake (1852-1919) was a military officer and politician of the Japanese Empire who served as the last Resident-General of Korea in the period leading up to annexation. After the annexation he became the first Governor-General of Korea, holding the post until 1916, and enforced a rule of force built around the gendarmerie police, establishing the coercive system of governance that marked the early colonial era. He later returned to Japan and served as its 18th Prime Minister.
