Taejo Wang Geon (877–943) was a general of Taebong during the Later Three Kingdoms period who went on to found Goryeo and become its first king. In 936 he unified the Later Three Kingdoms, bringing a long era of division to an end, and he consolidated the new state by embracing the many regional lords. His Ten Injunctions left to later kings and his northern expansion policy, aimed at recovering the former lands of Goguryeo, shaped the way Goryeo was governed for generations afterward.
